Overview

A Heartstring is a thread of fate that binds two souls in a predestined union that transcends time and space. These mystical bonds are similar to fated mate bonds, forging an unbreakable connection between those who share them. A Heartstring may grant shared abilities, heightened power, or even an extended lifespan. It is believed to be a divine force that strengthens both individuals, as love is said to be the frequency of magic itself. However, severing or rejecting a Heartstring comes at a devastating cost, as one of the bonded will die, though it is impossible to predict which one.

History & Creation

The origins of Heartstring bonds remain a myth, though they are believed to have been a gift from the gods, linked to celestial magic. While not exclusive to Starmages, Heartstrings were most often recorded in individuals with strong celestial connections, reinforcing the idea that this type of magic is deeply tied to fate itself. However, as Starmages were hunted and nearly eradicated, Heartstrings faded into legend, with many dismissing them as a lost relic of magic. Some scholars speculate that their disappearance was not natural but the result of deliberate suppression, likely tied to Moros and his efforts to eliminate celestial magic.

Mentions

Academy of Villains
  • In the Temple of the Gods, Moros’ name is revealed through ancient murals, exposing his role in Ithaka’s curse. His broken Heartstring is the source of the kingdom’s suffering, severing the balance of magic.
  • During a lecture at the Academy of Magic, Headmaster Whitefang introduces the concept of Heartstrings while discussing celestial magic and the Fates. He describes the Heartstring as an unbreakable thread of fate that once connected individuals, granting them immense power. He also confirms that with the fall of the Starmages, Heartstrings became little more than myth.

Trivia

  • In Plato’s Symposium, Aristophanes describes an origin myth where humans were once whole beings with two heads, four arms, and four legs. These powerful beings challenged the gods, prompting Zeus to split them in half, leaving each person incomplete and destined to search for their missing half. This concept of a divided soul seeking reunion mirrors the nature of Heartstring bonds, which are a thread of fate that binds two souls together, granting them shared power through a predestined union that transcends time and space.
